The Iowa Science Center will not reopen its IMAX theaters.
A blank IMAX dome was severely damaged in the June 2018 floods.
Water leaked into the building, damaging the roof, projectors, screens, and collection of IMAX films.
Kurt Simmons, director of the science center, said repairs to the theater would cost millions of dollars.
He said theaters in other regions are now catching up to the IMAX format, eliminating the novelty.
“Another thing that’s happened in the film industry is that more and more theaters are moving to high-fidelity digital, so the IMAX brand identity isn’t as strong as it used to be,” said Simmons. .
There are plans to redevelop the theater area. The Science Center plans to share them soon.
